Primary Daily Use Computer

FrontFrontInside

I built this system out of both new and used parts around Christmas of 2018 to replace my ThinkPad T430 as my main computer. The CPU, motherboard, RAM, SSD and primary hard drive were purchased new. Everything else either came from the previous setup or was picked out of a scrap pile.
It is the first system build I did since 2015! For being three years out of the practice I think it went well. It's not top of the line, but I didn't really want or need something top of the line either. Plus, when it gets outdated I can upgrade piecemeal, as opposed to a laptop which would need to be entirely replaced every time it got obsolete.

The first upgrade took place in July 2019, when I upgraded from the initial NVidia Quadro FX4600 (which had stability problems either because it was bad or it wasn't totally compatible with the AMD chipset) to an AMD Radeon HD7970, as well as an upgraded power supply.
The video card was upgraded again a year later to a Radeon R9-380, which was a slight improvement but not much.

Keeping with the "major upgrades for main computer" theme, in 2020 I upgraded the system to a Ryzen 7-3700X, with a new motherboard and new SSD.

In September 2021 I upgraded the CPU (and GPU I suppose), motherboard and SSD again. Unfortunately this necessitated a downgrade to Windows 10 due to not having a video driver for the new integrated video chipset.

Further minor upgrades: yet another new video card (RX6600) in May 2022, and a RAM + display upgrade in April 2023.
I have plans within the next year for a third major platform upgrade (finances permitting), which will likely necessitate a move to a different case for the first time.
