These are the three menus, Applications, Places and System.

The applications menu is obvious.
The Places menu includes links to drives attached to the system, folders in your home folder, network, a connect to server option, and a search and recent documents option.
System includes the help and about options, the shutdown option (marked “Quit”), and preferences+administration, basically the control panel.
