ReactOS is a recent open-source clone of Windows NT, that after many years is still in beta, and as “0.3.14” must tell you, it is nowhere near complete yet.
But of course, as you must imagine, this is a massive undertaking. And considering how much Microsoft loves to add and change things in Windows, it will always be exciting to see what comes next in ReactOS.

See my original 0.3.11 review for more information. Basically all that has been added here is ACPI support, a new TCP/IP driver, and a few more compatibility things.

ReactOS 0.3.14 Splash
The splash screen now looks similar to that of a modern Windows system.

ReactOS 0.3.14 BSOD
ReactOS fall down and go boom.

WARNING:
I would highly advise against trying to install the Windows guest additions, as that is what caused the problem. Oops.

ReactOS 0.3.14 Desktop
Now with that out of the way, here is the default desktop. The only real difference is that icons are now arranged in a more typical Windows fashion as opposed to in horizontal rows.

ReactOS 0.3.14 File Management
The Explorer shell now works with a completely rewritten SHELL32.DLL that was done in C++ as opposed to whatever the heck else it was done in before.
It is quite customizable. By default windows open in the same window, and the Explorer uses a Multiple Document Interface (MDI) style similar to the Windows 3.x file manager and program manager. It can be configured to work in a Single DI mode, and/or open folders in new windows.

ReactOS 0.3.14 MDI Explorer
MDI in operation.
It is interesting to note that there is still no web browser bundled by default. I would assume the Windows version of Firefox would work, but after my endeavor with the guest additions I would be cautiously optimistic about that fact.
