For those who are not aware, even though Windows was not released until 1985, it actually made its first appearance at the Fall 1983 COMDEX show, and later the December 1983 issue of Byte magazine.

This is a later beta release, from May 1985. For the most part, it is similar to the January 1985 Alpha, but adds support for colour. I am using an EGA display for these screenshots.
This release technically requires DOS 2.x or 3.x to run, but you can use SETVER on later versions to make it think you are running DOS 3.3. PS/2 mice are not supported out of the box, but there are hacked drivers out there.

The install process is mostly the same as with the final release, although you must manually make the install directory, otherwise you will get a General Failure message.

Windows 1 Beta Splash
Windows now has a splash screen (which is the same as the final release), and it is our first dose of colour!

Windows 1 Beta MS-DOS Executive
Of course, the desktop is still completely monochrome by default.
There are a few extra programs bundled, but for the most part things mimic the final release.

Windows 1 Beta Sample programs
Some of the included sample programs running.

Windows 1 Beta On-Close
Interestingly, when you close out of all the windows, the MS-DOS Executive stays iconized, unlike in later builds.
