Recently I happened to be reading up on Ubuntu and noticed a few interesting additions to their desktop environment offerings.
This isn't yet an official "flavour", but I thought it was interesting enough to take a look at anyway.

"DDE" stands for "Deepin Desktop Environment", a desktop environment released with what used to be called Linux Deepin out of China. Their website calls it "Powerful Ubuntu with the most beautiful desktop environment."
Given the most recent release as of this writing (August 2024) is 23.04 (i.e. they are now two versions behind), I am not sure there will be any further development here.

Ubuntu DDE 23.04 Login screen
This is the login screen. Pretty standard.

Ubuntu DDE 23.04 Desktop
The default desktop.

As you can see, they are trying very hard to make this look like Mac OS X. There is of course the pretty standard dock at the bottom. Beside that is what would normally be an upper taskbar, in the same form as the dock. Notification boxes appear at the top of the screen.
Behind the scenes it appears this is using Plasma desktop technology on Wayland. So in essence it's a re-worked KDE environment, which has been a standard for several decades now and is quite stable and popular.

Ubuntu DDE 23.04 Application list
Clicking the DDE logo in the dock reveals the applications list, which works basically the same as the normal Ubuntu activities page but with a Mac OS X "Launchpad"-like spin to it.
I still prefer actual menus with actual hierarchies, but I think we're long past the point where anyone else does. And those people can just keep using MATE.

Ubuntu DDE 23.04 Task view
This is the task view, or effectively Ubuntu DDE's version of Mac OS X "Mission Control".

Ubuntu DDE 23.04 File manager
A look at the file manager, which starts you off in a similar view to both later versions of Windows and Mac OS X, as opposed to your home folder as is traditional on Linux.
